The books of 1 and 2 Samuel tell the story of an important time in Israel’s history: the beginning of the monarchy under Saul and the rise and reign of King David. It’s a story of individual people as they relate to God. It’s also a story of politics and the dynamics of power—including its use and abuse.

1:1–2 / That the writers of the books of Samuel are interested in people is apparent from the beginning. The reader is plunged, without introductory analysis of the purpose of writing or preliminary theologizing, into an encounter with real people who are in a real situation, involved in real relationships, and encountering real problems.
